In 1964 Bloch shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Feodor Lynen “for their discoveries concerning the mechanism and regulation of the cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism.” Knowledge of the biosynthetic pathway for cholesterol eventually aided in the discovery of statins, drugs that interfere with cholesterol synthesis, which are now widely used to treat high cholesterol.
