(Paris), 73, 409-16, 1947.In 1946 Santos removed a thrombus and atheroma plaque from an artery in order to unblock it, and, using the knowledge acquired from Gordon Murray, placed the patient on heparin in order to avoid re-thrombosis. Called endarteriectomy, this technique spread around the world and remains the method of choice for treating severe stenoses and segmental obstructions in the arteries.
