Microarray-based detection and genotyping of viral pathogens.Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. (USA), 99, 15687-15692, 2002.First publication of DeRisi's microarray assay for the detection and genotyping of viral pathogens. "To address the limitations of existing viral detection methodologies, we have developed a genomic approach to virus identification. Using available sequence data from more than 140 sequenced viral genomes, we have designed a long oligonucleotide (70-mer) DNA microarray with the potential to simultaneously detect hundreds of viruses, including essentially all respiratory tract viruses" (from the Abstract). Characterization of a novel coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome.Science, 300, 1394-1399, 2003.Dated May 30, 2003. Rota and team at the CDC determined the sequence of the complete genome of SARS-CoV, and characterized the viral genome. Order of authorship in the published paper was Rota, Oberste, Monroe....DeRisi... (Thanks to Juan Weiss for this entry and its interpretation.)
