"During this era of rampant sectarianism in medicine, doctors frequently became dishonest or abusive as they competed for patients. To deal with this situation, the American Medical Association adopted [in 1847] a code of professional ethics. Hooker wrote a book-length commentary on this code, Physician and Patient....
